How to choose your ideal Wedding photographer.

There are so many different wedding photographers available, all with their own unique styles… your wedding photos are something you will hold on to and look back on for the rest of your lives so you need to make sure you get the perfect photographer. Read my tips below for a helping hand in choosing the right photographer for you.

  1. Firstly, set your budget! Before you even start enquiring with photographers, make sure you at least have a maximum budget in mind. All photographers have different price points and offer different packages, theres no point finding a photographer you love only to find out they cost way more than you’re able/willing to spend.

  2. Make sure you have your date secured before approaching any photographers, otherwise they won’t be able to tell you if they are definitely available!

  3. Look at different photographers’ styles and decide which style you like the best. Some photographers have very dark, moody styles, some have a light and airy aesthetic… you need to make sure you’ll be happy with your photographers' editing style. Its all down to personal choice, and once you decide what style you prefer it’ll help you narrow down your options.

5. Ask for recommendations… from friends, family, colleagues, social media… read google reviews, join facebook groups, ask your venue if they have a trusted suppliers list.

6. Make sure to see a portfolio of your photographers previous work before booking, ask to see a couple of full galleries from previous weddings rather than just the highlights, have a look through their social media pages and read through their google reviews. Ask if they have shot at your venue before, and if so, ask to see some of the images.

7. Personality types… you’re most likely going to want to book a photographer you get along well with, you’ll be surprised how much time you’ll spend with them on the day so you want to make sure they’re relaxed, easy going and they’ll put you at ease! You can always request a call over the phone before you confirm your booking, to make sure you’re 100% happy.

8. Timings… all photographers take their own approach to Wedding Photography, some require a lot of time to set up shots, some spend longer on group shots than others, some require extra time for drone shots or sunset shots etc. Make sure this is going to fit in with the schedule of your day!

9. Discuss the finer details, don’t be afraid to ask questions! Make sure you know all the terms of your contract… exactly what is included in your package, the number of images you will receive, the time your photographer will be with you. Ask about pricing options for prints and albums. If a second shooter isn’t included in your package, can this be requested? Make sure you know if theres going to be any hidden charges for travel, food, etc, further down the line. Check how long it will take to receive your final images!

10. Schedule a test run - a pre-wedding shoot or an engagement shoot is the perfect way to really get to know your photographer and to give yourself a feel for being in-front of the camera.

11. Go with your gut! Once you’ve narrowed down your options and evaluated each one, go with the one you’re 100% sure you’re going to be comfortable around and happy to have as such a big part of your day.
